| The
premises of the short stories in Dystopias (Almost) Everywhere
and the second volume Alternative Futures is that the implications
of new technology and of social/political trends are outstripping
our capacity to understand them and to deal with them. The settings
are beginning to appear right now in todays world, things like
climate change, wealth inequality, government surveillance, even talk
of alien UFOs and, most threateningly, AI. To what alternate future
do the trajectories of these trends lead? How do we deal with those
alternate futures coming at us so fast? Are AI androids going to challenge
us? If we live in a simulation of off-world gamers, how do we become
Free Humans (thats actually the plot of Among Us!)? My
short stories explore possible answers to these questions. Some are
not pretty, some are humorous. If you liked the early Black Mirror
episodes, youll like many of the stories.
A sample short
story is right here below the Dystopia (Almost) Everywhere
book cover. Its very short. Its flash fiction (1,000
words or less). None of the stories in Dystopias (Almost) Everywhere
are this short, but there will be more of these flash fiction stories
in my next short story collection right along with longer ones.
