collection of 12 short stories which image what future lies ahead
for future generations Alternative Futures is Volume Two of my short stories series, Dystopias (Almost) Everywhere being Volume One. In Alternative Futures I continue to explore the trajectories of current trends as in the stories The Future of Dating, Ala Carte Babies and Brains on a Shelf. Volume Two though also has some world building stories on a post-apocalyptic earth. These stories are in a newer sci-fi subgenre labelled cli-fi, short for climate sci-fi. In that vein, the story included here might be better called a novella in which different bands of people have to cope with major sea level rise and a harsh climate exacerbated by very poor air quality. They do not all get along! Not all stories in this volume are pessimistic. There is always humor to be found in any situation, you just might not see it right away. |
