The
premise of several of the short stories in Dystopias (Almost) Everywhere
and my novel tentatively titled Xland Versus Mars (coming out
in 2Q23) is that the implications of new technology and of social/political
trends are outstripping our capacity to understand them and to deal
with them. The settings are beginning to appear right now in todays
world, things like climate change, wealth inequality, government surveillance,
even talk of alien UFOs and, most threateningly, AI. To what alternate
future do the trajectories of these trends lead? How do we deal with
those alternate futures coming at us so fast? Are AI androids going
to challenge us? If we live in a simulation of off-world gamers, how
do we become Free Humans (thats actually the plot of Among
Us!)? My short stories explore possible answers to these questions.
Some are not pretty, some are humorous. If you liked the early Black
Mirror episodes, youll like many of the stories.
A sample short
story is right here below the Dystopia (Almost) Everywhere
book cover. Its very short. Its flash fiction (1,000
words or less). None of the stories in Dystopias (Almost) Everywhere
are this short, but there will be more of these flash fiction stories
in my next short story collection right along with longer ones.
p.s. In Xland
Versus Mars, there is a human colony on Mars, no aliens in sight.
There are no aliens in any of our alternative futures as I envision
them. No zombies either. In this case, a strong female rebel tries
to deal with the struggle between Xland and Mars. She has bigger
issues and a rougher life to deal with in her quest for justice
without having to deal with aliens and zombies.
